USD #410 Filtering System

The laptop computers have been issued to students to enhance their educational experience.  USD 410 understands there is a social world that students will have the desire to connect with through the Internet as well.  With this in mind, we have established a two-level filter system on each of student issued computers.

The columns below outline some basic parameters of the two levels of filtering USD 410 has established.  Both levels will continuously evolve as various considerations surface.  Our students and parents should also be aware of the following issues:

1) Attempts to circumvent the filter will be treated as a serious Acceptable Use Policy violation.

2) The laptop computer speed during times outside the school will be somewhat slower than what they will be during the school day.

3) The only student e-mail address that either filter level will recognize is the usd410.net student address.  If students have a hotmail, yahoo or other email address, they will need to use their family’s computer and web access.

4) Do not assume privacy at any time the laptop computer is being used online.  USD 410 administration and technology support will be able to review email communication any time a need is perceived.

5) We understand that many of our students may choose to use their family’s computer and web access outside of the school because of the home filter system.

6) The laptops are able to be used off-line at any time.

Teachers will be able to view student computer work throughout the day through the use of SmartSync®.  This will allow teachers to draw attention to exemplary student work and determine inappropriate student computer use.

Again, the lists provided can, and will change to include additional sites or remove sites if issues of inappropriate use arise.
